Ronald Perera's Why I Wake Early
based on the poetry of Mary Oliver

Sunday, May 17, 2009, 3:00 PM at the Church of the Covenant, Boston

As longed-for Spring finally arrives in Boston, Coro Allegro celebrated in a joyous work of reverence for nature. Massachusetts native Ronald Perera has set eight poems by Provincetown poet Mary Oliver to original and evocative music, following the evolving mood of a day -- dawn to dawn. Expressing a transcendental appreciation for the simple beauties observed in the landscape of New England and Cape Cod, Perera’s work was described by The New York Times as “a substantial addition to the choral canon.”

Also on the program was be Ken Fuchs's In the Clearing, based on poems by Robert Frost; Robert Stern's The Silver Swan; and Aaron Copland's The Promise of Living.

Thanks to all who attended this extraordinary concert!

Coro Allegro honors
Bishop Gene Robinson
with the 2009 Daniel Pinkham Award

Coro Allegro presented Bishop Gene Robinson with the 2009 Daniel Pinkham Award for Outstanding Contributions to Classical Music and to the GLBT Community at a special event on Friday April 3, 2009 at 8:00PM at the United Parish Church in Brookline. Bishop Robinson was honored for his extraordinary grace and courage as an advocate for GLBT equality and for reconciliation with communities of faith. Bishop Robinson also spoke of his lifelong love of music and its powerful social and spiritual roles, and he pledged to work with Coro Allegro Artistic Director David Hodgkins on future collaborations.

The Pinkham Award evening also featured a gripping performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Love Bade Me Welcome by the 2008 Pinkham Award recipient, baritone Sanford Sylvan. Rousing and celebratory works composed by Daniel Pinkham were performed by special guests Terry Everson, trumpet; Shiela Kibbe, piano; Mike Goodspeed, bass; and Roger Hodgkins, drums; along with Coro Allegro and its phenomenal piano accompanist Darryl Hollister.
