Come join the worldwide celebrations of the birthdays of two gay composers and musical icons of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten (100) and John Corigliano (75). Be moved by the poignant storytelling of Britten’s Cantata Misericordium, his setting of the parable of the Good Samaritan written in honor of the 100th birthday of the Red Cross. Then look back with us across centuries of other songs of compassion, from 10th- through 21st-century settings of the Ave Maria chant, to the radiant tintinnabulation of Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Messe and the evocative echoes of Corigliano’s setting of Dylan Thomas’s wistful retrospective, Fern Hill.
