The program brings together a range of American voices and perspectives, including works by Lebanese-American and Black composers and texts by James Weldon Johnson and Walt Whitman. LGBTQ+ history is woven throughout, from Whitman’s poetry and the intense relationship between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville to Philip Spooner’s moving testimony in support of marriage equality. Together, these works offer a variety of perspectives on American identity, belonging, equality, and connection, while treating listeners to a rich range of sonorities—from chorus and chamber ensemble to chorus and piano and the glorious sound of the chorus on its own.
